Presidential runoff to be held Nov. 3

The second round of the presidential election will take place in the Republic of Moldova in two weeks. The fight in the runoff vote will be between the first two candidates who gained the largest number of votes in the first round of voting. According to preliminary data, with 98.51 percent of the vote reports for the October 20 election counted, Maia Sandu won 42.07% of the ballot, while Alexandr Stoianoglo – 26.27% of the vote, IPN reports.

“Preliminary information shows that none of the 11 candidates for the office of President of the Republic of Moldova gained at least half of the votes cast in the election. Respectively, the second round of voting will be held in two weeks,” CEC chairwoman Angelica Caraman said at a press briefing on Monday.

Until the CEC receives the electoral documents in the original, the presented data are considered preliminary. The district electoral councils have 48 hours after the closing of polling stations to present the vote tabulation results for constituencies. The last polling stations in Canada closed on Monday at 07:00 a.m. Chisinau time.
