The Romanian authorities have evacuated 375 people in four counties and traffic is restricted in several areas of Harghita, Covasna and Brasov. Military firefighters have intervened in Brasov county to remove water from households and homes. Romanian hydrometeorologists have updated the code red warning for Harghita, Covasna, Brasov, Botosani and Iasi counties, valid from Thursday noon until Friday at 12:00, IPN reports.
Two villages in Covasna county are threatened by flooding after heavy rains covered streets and courtyards, reports Digi24.
Romanian Environment Minister Mircea Fechet said that although the meteorological situation is improving, the hydrological situation is critical and many households have already been affected in Covasna County. The minister added that hundreds of people are intervening in the flooded areas.
The National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management announced a code orange in the counties of Harghita, Mures, Brasov, Sibiu, Covasna, Buzau, Bacau, Neamt, Vrancea, Iasi, Vaslui and Galati until May 31.
The population is advised to withdraw from low-lying areas or near watercourses and take shelter in safe places at higher altitudes. It is important to avoid crossing flowing water, either on foot or by vehicle, and to disconnect household power supplies in hazardous situations.
People in areas at risk should follow the official announcements of the authorities and cooperate with emergency response teams in the event of a preventive or emergency evacuation.
