IOM supports police to prevent trafficking in persons-related recruitment and exploitation committed online

IOM in the Republic of Moldova organized a training on the Maltego software and the data bundles for the law enforcement officers within the specialized units of the General Police Inspectorate to improve their knowledge, skills, and tools to detect and prevent trafficking in persons-related recruitment and exploitation committed online, IPN reports.

“IOM hopes that this software and the data bundles will improve the quality of the investigations and ease the work of the investigators working with trafficking-related cases,” it is said in a press release issued by IOM Moldova.

The training was introduced by the opening remarks of Lilian Carabet, Deputy Head of the General Police Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Michael Paxton, Law Enforcement and Border Security Adviser, Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Section, the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, the U.S. Embassy in Moldova, Diana Donoaga-Certan, Protection Program Coordinator within IOM mission in the Republic of Moldova, and Engin Özdemir, the representative of Maltego.

The training, facilitated by Maltego, complements the IOM donation of the Maltego software and the data bundles to GIP in November 2023 to respond to the Moldovan Government’s priorities set forth for the next policy document on trafficking in persons as well as the challenges identified by investigation and prosecution actors, in particular the rise of online recruitment, exploitation, and abuse, especially of children.

These activities are generously funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, of the U.S. Department of State.
