The Ministry of Culture and the Monuments Inspection Agency will ask the court to cancel the permit issued to erect a building on the site of the former Gaudeamus cinema in Chisinau for the reason that the necessary appraisals were not requested, IPN reports.
The Ministry of Culture said that this project concerns the protection zone of the Historical Nucleus of Chisinau, the public forum monument Stela with bas-relief “Pan Halippa” and the public forum monument Sculptural Composition “Fighters for Soviet Power”.
The former developer, which in 2020 intended to build a residential complex on the site of the cinema, requested, before obtaining the building permit, the approval of the Ministry of Culture through the National Council for Public Forum Monuments. The draft project was then rejected.
After the developer was changed, in 2025 the Chisinau City Hall issued a new construction permit, without first obtaining the approval of the Ministry of Culture.
The Ministry and the Monuments Inspection Agency will ask the court to cancel the construction permit issued to build a 15-storey building near the public monuments and the Central Cemetery in Chisinau.
The Chisinau City Hall confirmed that it issued permits to build a multifunctional complex on Vasile Alecsandri St. Deputy mayor Ilie Ceban said that the documents were issued in accordance with the law.
