Procedure for issuing aids to persons with visual impairments specified

The persons with visual impairments will go to their regular ophthalmologist who, depending on the identified necessities, will refer these to the providers authorized to prescribe vision aids, with which the National Health Insurance Company signed contracts. The regulations concerning the method of issuing technical aids to particular categories of people were modified by the Cabinet at the suggestion of the Ministry of Health. The initiative refers to all the persons with visual impairments – severe, accentuated and moderate, IPN reports.

Those who will receive assistive vision correction devices and vision aids will be taught to use them by the institutions that prescribed them. In the case of other assistive devices for blind persons or persons with low vision, the training will be ensured by the providers authorized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection.

“In essence, by this decision we create a new service at the National Experimental Center for Orthopedic Prostheses and Rehabilitation by which assistive devices will be offered for diminishing, compensating for, monitoring or neutralizing visual impairments,” said Minister of Labor and Social Protection Alexei Buzu.

A sum of 2 million lei of the 2023 budget of the National Experimental Center for Orthopedic Prostheses and Rehabilitation will go to purchase assistive devices for blind persons and persons with low vision.
