The President of Romania, Nicusor Dan, has appointed MEP Siegfried Muresan as Prime Minister. The announcement was made after the head of state held a new round of consultations with parliamentary leaders and factions on Thursday morning, reports IPN.
Nicușor Dan stated that, in the more than four months since the dismissal of the Bolojan Government through a censure motion, he has held hundreds of hours of discussions with the parties, but rather noticed electoral calculations than concern for the national interest on the part of political leaders. The leader from Cotroceni pointed out that there is no outlined parliamentary majority, and the nomination of Siegfried Muresan was chosen because he gathered the most votes from the formations present at the consultations, given also his experience in the European Parliament.
Shortly after the president’s decision, Siegfried Muresan confirmed that he accepts the nomination. The MEP is set to negotiate with the parliamentary parties in the coming days to secure the necessary vote in Parliament. Siegfried Muresan was proposed as prime minister by PNL, USR, and UDMR.
During the consultations on Thursday, PSD and AUR separately expressed their willingness to take over the government, while the interim Prime Minister and PNL leader, Ilie Bolojan, mentioned that his party is ready to negotiate parliamentary support for the future designated Prime Minister. USR came up with the proposal of rotating governments, and UDMR declared itself open to a coalition alongside PSD and PNL. On the list of proposals were also Sorin Grindeanu, from PSD, and Victor Ponta, the leader of PACE-United for Romania, who proposed himself as Prime Minister.
