The Popular Assembly of Gagauzia has set a new date for the elections in the Comrat legislature. According to a resolution approved at an extraordinary meeting, the vote will take place on June 21, reports the IPN correspondent from Gagauzia.

The People’s Assembly approved six members of the Central Electoral Commission from Comrat: three appointed by the People’s Assembly and three by the Executive Committee. The candidate from the judicial authority was not presented. The authority invoked the verification of candidates by the Information and Security Service and by the integrity body. However, local deputies interpreted this as a deliberate delay in the electoral process.

During the meeting, the deputies put to a vote a resolution project proposing that “CEC Gagauzia” and the “Central Electoral Council” be recognized as the same body, operating under different names depending on the type of elections: at the local level – as a commission, at the national level – as a council. Another project, based on regional legislation, provided for the notification of the Ministry of Justice and the Constitutional Court. Both projects were rejected, and the decision on the name of the central electoral body was not adopted.

Deputy Nicolai Dudoglo proposed aligning the legislation of Gagauzia with the national one, however, the proposal was not put to a vote.

The deputies from Comrat discussed the resumption of the interparliamentary group’s activities with the legislature in Chisinau. The interim president of the People’s Assembly, Nicolai Ormanji, urged the submission of candidacies, emphasizing that the group’s activities can only be resumed with a full composition.

The Supreme Court of Justice has suspended the decision of the Popular Assembly of Gagauzia regarding the creation of the Central Electoral Commission in Comrat, considering the term “CEC Gagauzia” illegal. According to the law, the body bears the official name of “Electoral Council of Gagauzia”.
