President Maia Sandu maintains that Russia bears all responsibility for the situation created on the Dniester, after an attack on the Novodnestrovsk hydroelectric plant caused oil spills in the river, reports IPN.

“Russia’s attack on the Novodnestrovsk hydroelectric power station in Ukraine has caused oil spills in the Dniester river, threatening Moldova’s water supply. We have declared an environmental alert and are taking action to protect our people. Russia bears full responsibility,” states the head of state.

On Sunday, an environmental alert was established for 15 days on the Nistru river basin. The decision was approved by the Government, during an extraordinary meeting, as a result of the continuous wave of pollution with petroleum products.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has stated that, following the monitoring of the situation in recent days, it has been found that in some sectors in the north the level of contaminants exceeds the allowed limits. As a precautionary measure, the authorities have imposed restrictions on the use of water from the Nistru for localities situated on the segment between Rezina and Dubăsari.
