Spain and Portugal have come out of darkness

Spain and Portugal overcame the darkness. After the Monday power outage, supplies were restored. Energy distributors announced the restoration of services in both countries, IPN reports.

Spain restored 99% of its electricity supply, Spanish distributor Red Eléctrica said, quoted by El Pais. And Portugal’s distribution grid operator, E-Redes, said service had been fully restored, according to  Publico.pt.

The Spanish Minister of Transport announced the gradual reopening of high-speed and long-distance services. The Madrid metro reopened at 8:00 a.m. local time, with trains running at 50% capacity. Meanwhile, rail traffic in Catalonia was suspended again due to the unstable electricity service.

The power outage “paralyzed” the entire territory of Spain on Monday, the biggest problems being faced in rail transport, with hundreds of people having to stay in stations.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed the existence of “a strong oscillation, from a technical point of view, in the European electricity system, which triggered the interruption of energy supply throughout the Iberian Peninsula and in some areas of southern France,” according to the Spanish news agency EFE. King Philip VI will preside over the National Security Council that is to consider the resolution of problems.

The Portuguese government said that on Tuesday morning, electricity was restored to the country’s 6.4 million customers, who are now “connected normally”. “At the moment, practically all services, including the energy supply, have been restored,” Portugal’s energy minister António Leitão Amaro told the Portuguese news agency Lusa.

The companies Endesa and Iberdrola are investigating the causes of this major outage, which occurred on Monday, after lunchtime, in Spain. The malfunction affected Spain, Portugal and some areas of France and Andorra.
