Wildfires are wreaking havoc in the Turkish region of Izmir. Local press and authorities report that in the Kuyucak and Doganbey areas of the western province, wind speeds reached 40-50 km/h. Residents from four villages and two neighborhoods have been evacuated. The Izmir airport has temporarily suspended flights, reports IPN.
Nine major fires have broken out in Izmir, Denizli, Manisa, and Aydin. Helicopters, aircraft, and other vehicles, as well as around a thousand people, were trying to extinguish the fires.
Authorities have arrested a person for the fire in Bouca. According to the Turkish Minister of Justice, a suspect was arrested on charges of causing the fire using gasoline. “Judicial proceedings have been initiated against the person who allegedly set fire to their home and then caused the forest fire. Those who target our green heritage will not escape accountability before the law”, the dignitary warned.
